HIST 174
Introduction to the History of Science

Spring 2004 Course Syllabus Page 2

Required Texts:

  1. G. Holton & S. G. Brush, Physics, the Human Adventure
  2. HIST 174 Lecture Notes, buy from Bel-Jean through Maryland Book Exchange

Examinations (Feb. 25 & May 17) and Study Questions
There will be one 50-minute midterm exam (covering Topics I and II) on February 25, and a 2-hour final exam (covering all topics but with greater emphasis on topics III-VI) on May 17, starting at 1:30 pm, in MMH 1400.  All questions are essay or short-answer - no multiple choice.  The midterm exam will consist of two essay questions (choose one, 40%) and 12 short-answer questions (choose 6, 10% each); the final exam will consist of four essay questions (answer two, 20% each) and 24 short-answer questions (answer 12, 5% each).

The entire pool of possible questions based on the required readings is available on the course website; there will be a few other questions based on lectures and discussions in sections.  You should study all the questions and test your own knowledge by writing out the answers without using books or notes.  You are encouraged to discuss the questions with other students.  Ask your Teaching Assistant to explain any questions you are unable to answer after going through the reading assignments and lecture notes.

Attendance and Quizzes
Attendance and in-class participation are an integral part of the work of the course.  The Teaching Assistants may give short quizzes (not announced in advance) during the discussion section meetings.  Attendance and quizzes will influence your grade for "class participation" (see below and Schedule of Classes, Spring 2004, page 36).
